New Survey:

Week in Review:
Yet another great week in 4th grade! Great job this week. You get to enjoy a nice 3 day weekend too!
In Social Studies, we’re learning all about the native americans. Next week, we’ll finish up the matter unit by doing a couple experiments. The next units are Watery Earth and Electricity. Plenty of excitement to come in the near future!
In Math, we just finished up Unit 5. The class learned how to multiply 2 and 3 digit numbers using a variety of methods including partial product, lattice, and the traditional way. They also worked with rounding large numbers and estimating. The test was on Thursday. Next, the class will begin division.
In Writing, every student is doing a personal narrative on an impactful event in their lives. This is an exciting writing piece, and they are doing a great job!
In Reading, we continue to read a new book in Read Aloud. They finished up their first books in book clubs. I think most students really are enjoying book clubs. It gives them a chance to meet and discuss great books as a small group. These book clubs will continue. Next week, they will wrap up their book club by doing an end of book, group project. I can’t wait to see them!
A couple other things:
Friday is teacher/student switch day. I loved seeing all the creativity many students showed as they dressed up like a teacher. I enjoyed wearing sneakers, a hooded sweatshirt, and a hat.
Mrs. Douglas came in this week! She was very excited to meet everyone. She’ll be in next week too. We sat down and talked about all the wonderful things that are happening in fourth grade. She looks forward to continuing this throughout the rest of the year. We’re making the transition go as smooth as possible. Feel free to keep in touch with me through this blog. I’ll always check it!
Sadly, the Eagles are out of the playoffs. I wonder if McNabb will be an Eagle next year? What do you think about the Phillies getting rid of Lee? I guess we’ll see what happens.

Good afternoon,

We survived the first week back at school and the first week of 2010.  Many of us were a bit tired, but we made it through.  I hope everyone enjoys the weekend.

We got right back down to business this week.  In writing the class is doing another personal narrative.  This one is on an event that has impacted their lives or changed their lives.  I look forward to reading them.  Their writing has improved so much already!  In Math, we’re about to finish up Unit 5.  We should be ready for the test by Wednesday.  It’s amazing how quickly they realized they can multiply 2 and 3 digit numbers.  They picked it up so quick. We’ll review everything early next week. Next unit begins division.   In reading, we started a new read aloud book.  We’ll see if it’s as good as House on Hackman’s Hill.  We’re learning about native Americans and early explorers in Social Studies.

Other excitement:  The class met Mrs. Douglas; we had a 2 hour delay today; the geography bee was this week (great job Emma); we start skits with the Life Skills class next week (missed buddies today because of the delay).  That’s about it for now.  Have a great weekend!

Our class is having a debate.  Half the class will be for homework(odds) and half the class will be against it(even).  Please list valid reasons for your comments and opinions.  Have fun!

Week of 12/6-12/13

The days are ticking away until our holiday break! We finished up a lot of things this week.

In Social Studies, every group was given the chance last Monday and Tuesday to present their state research powerpoints. They did an amazing job, especially since it was the first presentation in front of the class. I can’t wait to do another one!

In Writing, we finished our personal narratives. I am in the process of reading and grading them. I am excited to hand them back and start on our next big writing piece. First, we will be writing a letter to a person of choice. The class is very excited for this activity.

In Math, we finished up Unit 4 and took the Unit test. Now, we’re onto Unit 5.

In Science, we’re nearing the end of the Matter Unit. The class is learning and exploring evaporation and condensation.

We began something very exciting in Reading. The class is broken into book clubs. Each group is reading a different book. Each student has a particular job they are assigned. Independently, each student needs to read several pages of the the book and complete their assigned job before the next book club meeting. They are loving it and doing great. We’re also about to finish our Read Aloud book. They can’t wait to hear the end!

As most of you know, the end of the week was exciting for me because Tiff and I settled on our house. The dogs, cats, and hamster are excited too.

*Noah’s mom commented on how great all the kids were at Noah’s party. Great job, and I’m glad you had fun!

Week of 11/29-12/5

It’s December! I can’t believe it. We had a great week. Art Goes to School came this week to teach the class about different artist and types of art work. As I’m sure you heard, we visited the Da Vinci Science Center on Thursday. It was an all day, hands on, Science experience. They were given the opportunity to explore all different topics in Science. The class did a great job! The school store opened for fourth grade this Friday. It will be open once a week for students to purchase school related items. Our class store also opened this week. Some students purchased items while others are still saving for some of the big ticket items. They need to keep earning their Cold Cash.

In Science, we explored how solids at room temperature are affected by heat. Using soap and wax, the class observed the two solids slowly melted into a liquid. Then, we removed the two items from the heat source. Both materials returned to a solid taking the shape of the container.

In Social Studies, the class prepared for their state research projects that will be presented on Monday and Tuesday. They’ve worked very hard on these PowerPoints, and I look forward to seeing them.

In Writing, we are almost done with our personal narratives. They are doing a great job completing all parts of the writing process.

In Math, we’re about to finish Unit 4. Check out the Everyday Math Resources and quizzes on my website. They are great for reviewing the concepts covered in this unit.

Overall, it was a successful week. It’s always tough to come back after Thanksgiving break. All of our minds are now in “holiday mode”. The class is doing a great job focusing and staying on task.

One more thing: Noah’s birthday party is this weekend. Have fun!!!

Week of 11/22-11/28

Well, we made it to the end of the first marking period, and even better, it’s Thanksgiving break! I hope all the students enjoy their time off. Have fun with your family and friends. Thank you to all the parents for coming in for conferences. It was great to get the opportunity to talke with all of you. The support is very appreciated. I look forward to another fun, exciting marking period.

Last week, we were working on some fun, educational assignments. In Social Studies, the class continues to work on their state research projects. They are finishing up their PowerPoints. Next week, they will practice and present their projects in front of the class. They are having a lot of fun working with a partner during this process, and they are learning skills that are important for them to know in the future. In Writing, they are peer editing as they complete their first 5 paragraph personal narrative. It’s exciting to see them read each other’s papers and have meaningful discussions along the way. They all seem to be enjoying the writing process. We are into decimals in Math right now. This can be a bit tricky. The class needs to take their time while figuring out these types of problems. We continue to enjoy our read aloud book, The House on Hackman’s Hill.

So, it continues to be a fun, learning adventure in the classroom.
